Medical Education in India is governed and regulated by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Apart from the field of Medicine, the other Medical Apex Bodies in India in the fields of Dental and Pharmacy are the Dental Council of India (DCI) and the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI).

The most basic and popular of all entry level medical courses is the Bachelor of medicine and Bachelor of surgery or as it is popularly known as, MBBS course. After MBBS, post graduate level courses (MD or MS) can be chosen and there are many specializations including General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Psychiatry, and Anesthesiology. There are also options for super specialization through Ph.D in any stream of medicine.

Post Graduate Medical Courses: 
M.D. (Doctor of Medicine)
 
This program is 3 years course that leads to postgraduate degree in medicine. Doctors possessing M.B.B.S. degree are eligible to for this course. This program is a specialized program in general medicine. A doctor after successful completion of this course is eligible to work as a Physician.

M.S. (Master of Surgery)

This program is 3 years course that leads to postgraduate degree in surgery. Doctors possessing M.B.B.S. degree are eligible to for this course. A doctor after successful completion of this course is eligible to work as Surgeon.

Postgraduate Diploma

Postgraduate diploma program in medicine is offered by various medical colleges or institutions across the country for MBBS degree holders. The duration of the program varies from 2 to 3 years. 
Super Speciality Courses: After completion of post graduate degree in Medicine, one can opt for DM and Mch courses, which are superspeciality courses. If one wishes to pursue courses in surgery, then one can can opt for Mch (Superspeciality surgical degree). For courses in medicine courses in DM (Superspeciality medical degree) can be chosen. The courses that are available in streams including Medicine, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Nephrology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Gastroentrology and Nephrology.
