Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi was established in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. BHU played a crucial role in the independence movement and developed into a great center of learning in India. BHU has contributed a lot in the development of the country by producing a number of scholars, artists, scientists and technologists who have helped in building a modern India with their individual contribution to the society.
The University has several institutes, colleges and schools, which offers a wide range of programs in sciences, technologies and humanities. The Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) is one of the institutes of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which imparts Medical Education. The institute offers a wide range of courses and it also conducts an All India Entrance Examination for taking admission into those medical programs offered by the institute. 

Banaras Hindu University holds an All India Competitive Written Test for taking admission into medical programs offered by Institute of Medical Sciences. Institute of Medical Sciences conducts BHU-PMT (Banaras Hindu University Pre-Medical Entrance Exam (BHU-PMT)) entrance exam for taking admission into MBBS, BDS, BAMS and B.Pharm programs. There are 2 stages of the exam namely PMT-2012 Screening and PMT-2012 Main. PMT 2012 Screening is held for preparing the merit list for BAMS, BDS and B.Pharm programs and BHU-PMT Main is held only for MBBS program.
Eligibility Criteria for BHU-PMT 
Passed intermediate / 10+2 or equivalent examination in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Zoology + Botany) taken together.
For MBBS/BDS/BAMS:A minimum of 50% marks for general and 45% for general-PC candidates and 40% marks for OBC/SC/ST and respective PC candidates.
For B.Pharm: A minimum of 60% marks for general / OBC and respective PC candidates and 55% marks for SC/ST and respective PC candidates.
Candidates appearing in qualifying examination may also apply.

Application Procedure for BHU-PMT
Application form can be obtained:
By Cash: Rs. 1500/- for general/OBC and Rs. 1000/- for SC/ST candidates from the branches of Bank of Baroda.
By Post: From the office of the Director (PMT-Cell), Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi-221 005 by sending a written request through registered post along with crossed demand draft/bankers cheque (MICR only) of Rs. 1600/- for general/OBC candidates and Rs. 1100 for SC/ST candidates of a nationalized bank, drawn in favor of “The Director, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU” payable at Varanasi. Application form will be sent by speed/registered post.
Application form duly completed must be sent through registered post so as to reach The Director (Pmt Cell), Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi-221 005 latest by 15.03.2012

Paper Pattern for BHU-PMT 
BHU-PMT entrance exam is a 2 stage examination namely BHU-PMT screening exam and BHU-PMT Main exam. Candidates who are willing to pursue medical programs such as MBBS or BDS at IMS-BHU must have to appear for the BHU-PMT entrance exam. Merit list will be prepared based on the BHU-PMT screening test for both BAMS and B.Pharm programs.
BHU-PMT Screening –
The BHU-PMT screening test will have a single question paper consisting of 200 objective type questions.
Each correct answer will carry 2 marks.
For each incorrect answer 1 mark will be deducted.
There will be 50 questions each from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology with a maximum of 100 marks for each subject.
BHU-PMT Main –
There will be a single question paper consisting of 200 objective type questions.
The medium of the paper will be in English.
Each correct answer will carry 2 marks.
1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
The Question paper will be divided into 2 sections namely Section ‘A’ and Section ‘B’.
Section A:
This section consists of 100 questions and the questions are divided into 4 groups namely Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.
Each group carries 25 questions.
This section will carry multiple choice questions with 4 options and only 1 option will have the correct answer.
Section B:
This section consists of 100 questions and the questions are divided into 4 groups namely Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.
